Al-Balad (The City, This Countryside), 20 ayat, Makkan sura

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

Nay, I swear by this city * 1

And thou art an indweller of this city * 2

And the begetter and that which he begat * 3

We verily have created man in an atmosphere * 4

Thinketh he that none hath power over him? * 5

And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth * 6

Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? * 7

Did We not assign unto him two eyes * 8

And a tongue and two lips * 9

And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways? * 10

But he hath not attempted the Ascent * 11

Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is * 12

(It is) to free a slave * 13

And to feed in the day of hunger * 14

An orphan near of kin * 15

Or some poor wretch in misery * 16

And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and export one another to pity * 17

Their place will be on the right hand * 18

But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand * 19

Fire will be an awning over them * 20

Ash-Shams (The Sun), 15 ayat, Makkan sura

And the moon when she followeth him * 2

And the day when it revealeth him * 3

And the night when it enshroudeth him * 4

And the heaven and Him who built it * 5

And the earth and Him who spread it * 6

And a soul and Him who perfected it * 7

And inspired it (with conscience of) what is wrong for it and (what is) right for it * 8

He is indeed successful who causeth it to grow * 9

And he is indeed a failure who stunteth it * 10

(The tribe of) Thamud denied (the truth) in their rebellious pride * 11

When the basest of them broke forth * 12

And the messenger of Allah said: It is the she camel of Allah, so let her drink * 13

But they denied him, and they hamstrung her, so Allah doomed them for their sin and razed (their dwellings) * 14

He dreadeth not the sequel (of events) * 15

Al-Lail (The Night), 21 ayat, Makkan sura

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

By the night enshrouding * 1

And the day resplendent * 2

And Him Who hath created male and female * 3

Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends) * 4

As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) * 5

And believeth in goodness * 6

Surely We will ease his way unto the state of ease * 7

But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent * 8

And disbelieveth in goodness * 9

Surely We will ease his way unto adversity * 10

His riches will not save him when he perisheth * 11

Lo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance * 12

And lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former * 13

Therefor have I warned you of the flaming Fire * 14

Which only the most wretched must endure * 15

He who denieth and turneth away * 16

Far removed from it will be the righteous * 17

Who giveth his wealth that he may grow (in goodness) * 18

And none hath with him any favor for reward * 19

Except as seeking (to fulfil) the purpose of his Lord Most High * 20

He verily will be content * 21

And by the night when it is stillest * 2

Thy Lord hath not forsaken thee nor doth He hate thee * 3

And verily the latter portion will be better for thee than the former * 4

And verily thy Lord will give unto thee so that thou wilt be content * 5

Did He not find thee an orphan and protect (thee)? * 6

Did He not find thee wandering and direct (thee)? * 7

Did He not find thee destitute and enrich (thee)? * 8

Therefor the orphan oppress not * 9

Therefor the beggar drive not away * 10

Therefor of the bounty of thy Lord be thy discourse * 11

Have We not caused thy bosom to dilate * 1

And eased thee of the burden * 2

Which weighed down thy back * 3

But lo! with hardship goeth ease * 5

Lo! with hardship goeth ease * 6

So when thou art relieved, still toil * 7

And strive to please thy Lord * 8

At-Tin (The Fig, The Figtree), 8 ayat, Makkan sura

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

By the fig and the olive * 1

By Mount Sinai * 2

And by this land made safe * 3

Surely We created man of the best stature * 4

Then We reduced him to the lowest of the low * 5

Save those who believe and do good works, and theirs is a reward unfailing * 6

So who henceforth will give the lie to thee about the judgment? * 7

Is not Allah the most conclusive of all judges? * 8

Al-Alaq (The Clot, Recite), 19 ayat, Makkan sura

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

Read: In the name of thy Lord who createth * 1

Createth man from a clot * 2

Read: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous * 3

Who teacheth by the pen * 4

Teacheth man that which be knew not * 5

Nay, but verily man is rebellious * 6

That he thinketh himself independent * 7

Lo! unto thy Lord is the return * 8

Hast thou seen him who dissuadeth * 9

A slave when he prayeth? * 10

Hast thou seen if he (relieth) on the guidance (of Allah) * 11

Or enjoineth piety? * 12

Hast thou seen if he denieth (Allah's guidance) and is froward? * 13

Is he then unaware that Allah seeth? * 14

Nay, but if he cease not. We will seize him by the forelock * 15

The lying, sinful forelock * 16

Then let him call upon his henchmen * 17

We will call the guards of hell * 18

Nay! Obey not thou him. But prostrate thyself, and draw near (unto Allah) * 19
